A Fake Badge and a Real Fear

Latrance Battle, 52, walked into a hotel chain on April 10 wearing a black shirt labeled "ICE" and carrying a hand-held radio. According to the Bay County Sheriff's Office, Battle showed the woman a sheriff’s office business card and demanded she come with her, claiming she was an immigration officer.

Fearing she might face deportation, the victim — who is in the process of becoming a legal U.S. resident — complied and got into Battle’s vehicle. The staged ICE act continued as Battle spoke into her radio, reinforcing the illusion of authority.

The Escape at Bridge Plaza

As Battle drove, the woman attempted to call her husband and attorney. That’s when Battle allegedly snatched the phone from her hand, according to deputies. They eventually stopped at the Bridge Plaza apartment complex, where Battle claimed more ICE agents would be waiting. Stopping at an apartment complex instead of the police station made the woman suspicious that Battle was not a real federal agent.

When Battle went inside, the victim saw an opportunity to escape. She ran, hid behind a neighbor’s car, and asked for help. The neighbor hid her in his apartment until deputies arrived.

Previous Restraining Order Ties to Suspect

The victim’s husband identified Battle as his ex-girlfriend — the same woman who had attacked him two years earlier, prompting a restraining order.

Battle was arrested while en route to Alabama. She now faces multiple felony charges, including kidnapping, robbery by sudden snatching, impersonating a law enforcement officer, and violating probation.
