Wrong-Way Driving Prompts 911 Calls

On April 12, 33-year-old Katelyne Dye was charged with DUI after multiple reports of a USPS mail truck being driven in the wrong direction on South Harbor City Boulevard. Witnesses told authorities the vehicle was also swerving across lanes and that the driver was tossing plastic cups out of the truck.

When officers located the vehicle, they saw it driving westbound on East University Boulevard before making a sudden U-turn. The truck continued traveling east, veering out of its lane and into oncoming traffic, according to the police report.

Confused Driver Admits to Drinking Vodka Shots

Police pulled Dye over and described her behavior as “confused and disoriented.” Field sobriety tests were administered, and officers noted signs of intoxication. When questioned, Dye admitted to stopping at a home on Riverview Drive during her route, where she was invited to a party. She confessed to taking two shots of vodka before continuing her deliveries.

She told officers that she swerved because she had fallen asleep behind the wheel and that the cup she discarded was just water she used to rinse her mouth to mask the smell of alcohol.

Several witnesses who called 911 said the mail truck nearly collided with other vehicles along U.S. 1. Dye was ultimately arrested and taken to the Brevard County Jail.
