Termites Thrive in Florida's Warm, Dry Climate

Warm and dry conditions help termites thrive, which may explain why Florida cities are regulars on the list. Tampa maintained its No. 3 ranking, while Orlando and West Palm Beach saw increases, climbing to No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

“Hotter weather accelerates how quickly termites destroy wood,” according to Orkin’s report. “And drier conditions give them the perfect environment to stay active year-round.”

Costly and Sneaky: Termites Cause Billions in Damage

Glen Ramsey, Director of Entomology at Orkin, warns homeowners that termites are more than just a nuisance—they’re expensive. “They cause about $5 billion in damage to homes every year,” Ramsey said. “And because they often go unnoticed, the damage can be severe before it’s detected.”

Signs to Watch For—and How to Prevent an Infestation

Orkin encourages homeowners to keep an eye out for:

  • Small swarms of winged insects inside or near the home
  • Cracked or bubbling paint
  • Wood that sounds hollow when tapped
  • Mud tubes on walls or beams
  • Piles of discarded wings or droppings

To prevent an infestation, Orkin recommends:

  • Clearing water drainage areas
  • Sealing gaps around pipes and utility lines
  • Maintaining gutters and A/C units
  • Removing rotting wood and debris
  •  Screening windows and vents
  • Regularly inspecting wooden structures

Taking these simple steps could save homeowners thousands and a major headache.
