A late-night incident in Hillsborough County ended with a man behind bars after deputies say he attempted to fly a drone carrying methamphetamine and fentanyl into a residential neighborhood.

Strange Visit Leads to Unusual Discovery

Deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office were called to a home in Lutz, just north of Tampa, after a homeowner reported an unusual encounter. A man had appeared at her door claiming his drone had gone missing and might have landed in her backyard.

The man was later identified as 49-year-old Jason Brooks. Body camera footage released by the sheriff’s office shows deputies searching the property and recovering a drone. What was attached to it, however, was far from ordinary.

Drone Carrying Dangerous Drugs

Deputies said several bags containing both methamphetamine and fentanyl were strapped to the drone. Some of the bags were even labeled with names. Investigators tested the substances and confirmed the narcotics.

Officials described the discovery as highly concerning, especially considering the potential danger if the drugs had been picked up by someone unaware of what they contained. The sheriff’s office emphasized the seriousness of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid linked to a growing number of overdose deaths nationwide.

Additional Charges for Brooks

Brooks’ troubles went beyond the drone and drugs. A records check revealed his vehicle was unregistered, missing a license plate, and that he was driving with a suspended or revoked license.

He was arrested and booked on multiple charges, including possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to sell, operating an unregistered vehicle, and driving with a revoked license.

A Broader Problem

Authorities in Florida say the case highlights a larger and ongoing concern about fentanyl’s presence in communities. Law enforcement agencies across the state continue to warn about the drug’s role in overdose deaths, underscoring the risks it poses when combined with other illegal substances.

The investigation into Brooks’ actions remains ongoing as officials determine how the drugs were intended to be distributed.
