Cory Ross Back at the Helm for Quad City Steamwheelers in 2027

The Quad City Steamwheelers are sticking with proven leadership as they aim to rebuild following a rare postseason misstep. The Indoor Football League (IFL) franchise announced that Head Coach Cory Ross has signed an extension to remain at the helm for the 2027 season, marking his ninth year with the team and his 15th season overall in the coaching ranks.

Since the organization's rebirth in 2018, Ross has been the cornerstone of the Steamwheelers' modern success.

His accomplishments with the Steamwheelers include:

• 2025 IFL Coach of the Year
• 2022 Eastern Conference Championship
• 2025 Eastern Conference Championship Game appearance
• 2025 Eastern Conference No. 1 Seed, the first No. 1 seed for the Steamwheelers since the franchise's rebirth in 2018
• Four consecutive playoff appearances from 2022–2025
• 3-3 postseason record
• One National Championship appearance

Reflecting On The 2026 Season

The 2026 season ended that postseason streak, marking the first time since the team returned to action in 2022 that they missed the playoffs. Rather than making a change, the front office views the setback as a springboard for growth.

"Winning traditions don't disappear because you have a difficult season," said Steamwheelers General Manager Destiny Brown. "They are rebuilt through the choices you make afterward. We learned what we needed to learn. We know what we need to protect. And we know what we need to change."

Brown emphasized that Ross' deep familiarity with the organization makes him the right person to lead the rebound. "He knows this organization, he knows our expectations, and he understands the level of commitment it takes to build a successful program."

Coach Ross Is Coming Back "Renewed"

For Ross, the contract extension serves as a clear directive to raise the bar as offseason preparations begin at Vibrant Arena at The MARK.

"I'm coming back renewed and refocused, ready to pour everything I have into our players and this program," Ross said. "We're raising the standard together and building something worthy of a championship."

With Ross locked in, the Steamwheelers front office immediately shifts its focus to roster construction, staffing, and player development for the 2027 season, intent on restoring the franchise to its position among the IFL's elite.
