Getting your car repaired usually isn’t something people look forward to, but the owners of Open Bay Auto in East Moline are hoping to change that experience completely.

A Different Kind of Auto Repair Shop Opens in East Moline

The new auto repair shop offers standard vehicle services like oil changes, brake work and general repairs, but owners Wendy and Christopher Hermann say their mission goes far beyond fixing cars.

The couple said the idea came from hearing countless stories from friends and family who felt uncomfortable or even taken advantage of during past repair experiences.

“I think everybody has a story where they feel that they've been taken advantage of or they didn't feel comfortable,” Wendy said. “It doesn't have to feel that way. You should be able to walk right in (and) feel comfortable with the people working on your car.”

Complimentary Lounge and a Full-Service Nail Salon

Open Bay Auto was designed to feel more welcoming than a traditional repair shop. Customers waiting for service can relax in a lounge area featuring a complimentary make-your-own beverage bar and a lending library.

But the feature getting the most attention is the fully functioning nail salon inside the business, allowing customers to get their nails done while their vehicle is being serviced.

“My favorite comment I hear from people when they walk in the front door is, 'Oh my gosh, this cannot be an auto repair shop.' This doesn't feel like auto repair,” Wendy said.

The Hermanns believe the atmosphere helps remove some of the stress many people associate with bringing in their vehicles for repairs.

“I feel like you need to walk into the space to truly recognize the benefits we bring, the value that it provides, and just how different we are,” Wendy said.

Owners Focus on Comfort and Transparency

The customer-first approach also carries over into the repair process itself. Christopher Hermann said communication and transparency are a major part of how they do business.

“Providing videos, taking pictures, having them come out here and look at what is happening, just trying to be as transparent as possible so when you're hit with that bill, you have an understanding of why,” Christopher said.

The Hermanns hope their approach helps customers feel more informed, more comfortable and less stressed when it comes to vehicle repairs.
