Drug-Smuggling Cat Busted Trying to Sneak Narcotics into Costa Rican Prison
Prison guards in Costa Rica stopped a drug-smuggling attempt — and the suspect was none other than a house cat. The feline was caught trying to scale a fence at the Pococí Penitentiary with bundles of drugs tied to its back.

According to Costa Rica’s Ministry of Justice, the cat was spotted last Tuesday night by an officer monitoring the prison’s green zone. The cat was climbing a barbed wire-covered fence when it was apprehended. Inside the small package strapped to its body, guards found approximately 236 grams of marijuana and 68 grams of heroin.
Fast Response Prevents Drug Delivery Behind Bars
Once the cat was seen near the fence line, officers acted quickly to intercept it before it could make its way into the prison. The swift response by the guards prevented the illegal goods from reaching inmates inside the facility.
Authorities also found sheets of paper used for wrapping narcotics, raising suspicions that this wasn’t the first time someone tried to use a pet to transport drugs.
The Ministry of Justice shared video footage of the strange event on social media, showing officers using scissors to carefully remove the package from the cat’s fur.
Investigation Underway to Find Who’s Behind the Plot
The cat has since been handed over to Costa Rica’s National Animal Health Service for a health evaluation. Meanwhile, prison officials are reviewing security camera footage to trace where the cat came from and determine who may have been behind this unusual smuggling operation.
This isn’t the first time animals have been used to traffic drugs, but using a domestic cat to attempt a prison drop-off has surprised even seasoned authorities. Officials continue to investigate in hopes of uncovering who was waiting on the other side of the prison walls.
