An Italian driver was shocked when they opened a letter to find a ticket for going 703kmh (436mph) in a 70kmh (43mph) zone in their Ford Focus.

Along with the fine, the driver received 10 penalty points, putting them halfway toward a driving ban.

A photo of the ticket was shared by Giovanni Strologo, a member of the "Highway Compliance Committee", who scolded police for not checking the ticket first, because it's obviously a glitch in the system.

He advised the driver accept the charge and appeals for compensation instead of fighting for dismissal, because the computer wouldn't have triggered if they weren't in fact over the speed limit. The committee has offered legal counsel to help in court.
