Male Doctor Secretly Filmed 30 Victims Using Hidden Spy Cameras
A disgraced Scottish doctor was found guilty of secretly recording 30 people using hidden spy cameras — a crime he blamed on his insecurities about his body.
Hidden Cameras Planted in Bathroom and Bedroom
Ju Young Um, 34, installed tiny cameras inside air fresheners and smoke alarms around his flat in Glasgow’s Hyndland area. Some victims were fellow doctors, while others were women who stayed in his home, including guests from Airbnb rentals. Um told the court he suffered from body dysmorphia and wanted to compare himself to other men. However, jurors ruled that his actions were done for sexual gratification, not medical curiosity.
Victims Included Friends, Colleagues, and Airbnb Guests
The trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court revealed that Um’s victims included three men and one woman who were his colleagues. One of them testified about the devastating betrayal, saying, “It makes me feel shocked, betrayed, and disgusted — not just for myself but also for my now wife. We trusted him as a professional.”
Evidence showed that Um had secretly filmed one colleague while he showered at staff accommodation at Dumfries and Galloway Infirmary. Another victim was filmed on the toilet during a dinner visit to Um’s home, while a third doctor was recorded multiple times over a three-month span.
Prosecutors highlighted that Um backed up the recorded videos to hard drives and pen drives, ensuring he would not lose them.
Doctor Blamed "Small Manhood" for Crimes
During the trial, Um testified that he had struggled with body issues since his teenage years, including a diagnosis of suspected gigantism, which he claimed led to a smaller-than-average penis.
He said he avoided looking up body comparisons online, fearing he might accidentally encounter illegal images. He also claimed not to watch pornography because it presented unrealistic body types.
Despite his excuses, jurors convicted Um on 23 counts under the Sexual Offences Act. Sheriff Owen Mullan placed Um on the Sex Offenders Register and deferred sentencing until next month. For now, Um remains free on bail.
