Squirrels Return with a Vengeance

Laura Edwards from Burlington thought her squirrel troubles were over when she traded in her damaged 2020 Chevrolet Traverse for a brand-new 2024 model. But after a year of peace, the pesky rodents returned—building nests under her hood and chewing through critical wiring in her new vehicle.

In videos shared by Edwards, squirrels are seen crawling around her SUV, causing electrical malfunctions and expensive damage.

History Repeats Itself

Edwards' previous SUV suffered so much rodent-related damage that her mechanic eventually told her to get rid of it altogether. “It was ongoing with that car,” she said. “It got to the point where he said, ‘Get rid of the car,’ because he couldn’t do any more to it.”

Now, the new car is experiencing the same issues. She recently spent $500 on wire repairs and fears more damage is coming. “They make a disastrous mess. They chew the wires, pack in leaves and branches, and it all ends up under the hood.”

Springtime Surge in Squirrel Activity

Experts say Edwards isn't alone. Wildlife control specialist Johnny Marks from SWAT Wildlife Inc. says this behavior is especially common in spring, when squirrels seek warm, safe places to give birth. “If your car sits idle, it can look like the perfect nesting spot,” he explained.
Wires made with organic, soy-based materials may also attract squirrels, as they’re more appetizing to chew.

Looking for a Solution

Rodent damage often isn’t covered by warranties, leaving car owners to foot repair bills that can reach into the thousands. Edwards is desperate for a solution. “There has to be something out there that works,” she pleaded. “If anybody knows, please tell me—I’m at my wits’ end.”
