Talk about an unexpected surprise in your trick-or-treat haul. A Pittsburgh woman’s Halloween heartbreak has turned into a happy ending after her lost engagement ring was found at the bottom of a local family’s candy bag.

A Halloween Treat With a Sparkly Twist

Maddie Carver says her ring disappeared while she and her husband, Ryan Quiggle, were handing out candy at their home on Larkins Way in the South Side. “We searched everywhere, we searched in the basket of candy, the ring was nowhere to be found. And so, my only thought is that it went into one of the kids' trick-or-treat bags,” Carver told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4.

From Love Story to Candy Chaos

The couple had about 100 little ghosts and goblins stop by that night. “I was picking up big piles of candy out of our candy basket and throwing it kind of playfully into the kids’ trick-or-treat bags because they were so cute. We were having so much fun,” Maddie said. But that fun quickly turned into panic when she realized her ring on her finger since December 2011 had vanished.
“I spent years and years on dating apps trying to find the love of my life, and finally did, and he proposed, and it was one of the best days of my whole life,” she said. “That ring has so much sentimental value, even more than the monetary value; the sentimental value is worth more than anything.”

A Sweet Ending After All

After posting online and even contacting police, Maddie’s story hit the news—and that’s when a local family realized they had something shiny in their candy stash. They returned it right away. Maddie got her ring back. “It was at the bottom of a trick-or-treat bag,” she said. Proof that sometimes, good karma really is the sweetest treat of all.
