10-year-old Caught Driving Family Minivan Was Just Trying to Get Cheerios
A 10-year-old kid from Stillwater, MN took his family's 2016 Chrysler minivan out for a drive on Sunday night because he needed to get some breakfast for the morning.
The police officer spotted the young driver behind the wheel and flipped on his lights and siren, but that was when "the kid took off,” according to Police Chief Brian Mueller.
As the kid began to speed away, the officer flipped his lights off and stopped the pursuit out of concern for the kid's safety, but he continued to follow at a difference.
The kid “disappeared out of view and then drove back westbound through the intersection in reverse,” according to Mueller.
When reversing, the 10-year-old backed into an embankment in the yard of a house, “narrowly missing a large tree and several other large objects in the process." The officer parked his squad car in front of the car to block it from moving forward.
“We’re just thankful that nobody was hurt - either the kid driving or any other innocent bystanders,” Mueller said.
The boy told officers he was headed to Target to get some Cheerios to eat for breakfast the next morning.
His parents said they were in bed, sleeping, and had no clue their kid snuck out with their family minivan. They also said when they returned the car home, there were some damages to the passenger side that they didn't recall being there when they went to bed earlier that night.
