Several states across the U.S. consistently rank high in divorce rates, for reasons that range from socio-economic struggles to cultural trends. Let’s take a closer look at the states where marriages tend to end most often.

The States with the Highest Divorce Rates

Why Are Divorce Rates So High in These States?

While each state has its unique factors, a few common themes emerge. Economic hardship plays a big role in marital stress. Younger marriages, which are more common in states like Arkansas and Oklahoma, tend to end in divorce more often than those formed later in life. Additionally, access to mental health services and marriage counseling can make a difference, and in rural or economically challenged areas, those services can be harder to find.

States with Lower Divorce Rates

Interestingly, states with higher urban populations and stronger economies, like Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Illinois, tend to have lower divorce rates. These areas often see couples waiting longer to marry and have greater access to relationship resources and support.
