In Northern Kentucky, a man known as Halloween Herm is keeping a decades-old family tradition alive — and this year, he’s taking it to the next level. His home on Village Green Drive, transformed into “Deadsprings Cemetery,” has become a beloved community landmark every Halloween. The tradition began with his mother when he was a child, and after her passing in 1999, Herm continued the display in her honor.

“We lost her in ’99 to cancer, so the day she passed, Aug. 18, is the day they start setting up in her memory,” Herm shared.

Raising Money for a Cause

Beyond the decorations, Herm uses his spooky setup to do good. Each year, he partners with a different charity, placing a donation bin out front for visitors. This Halloween, he’s teamed up with Brett Ruschmann to raise funds for the Northern Kentucky Children’s Advocacy Center.

“We need more positivity for children,” Herm said. “Any way that we can help them grow up in a better environment is what we want to do.”

Aiming for a Guinness World Record

This year’s display could also make history. Herm recently contacted Guinness World Records, hoping to earn recognition for having the most props in a Halloween display. “We discovered there are no records for the number of props in a Halloween display. We have over 300,” he said.

More Than Just Decorations

Herm’s ever-changing display often includes timely tributes, from honoring Taylor Swift to celebrating the Cincinnati Reds. “It’s dynamic,” Herm explained. “If something happens—relevant in the news, or a celebratory moment with a neighbor—they might get a skeleton like awesome Alexis Martin.”

The Deadsprings Cemetery display runs through Nov. 1. Visitors are welcome but asked to stay on sidewalks and be respectful of the property and neighbors.
