Town Called “WORST Place In Illinois” and Residents are Pissed it’s Not Chicago
Edit: This is not the opinion of any DJ or Townsquare Media employee. Simply an opinion report from a YouTuber.
There are plenty of stats and figures that may point to the northeastern part of Illinois when one is talking about crime and bad areas to be in.
It's easy to point to Chicago when griping about politics or taxes but one reviewer puts a different Illinois town in the crosshairs (so to speak). A town that's right across the Mississippi River from Downtown St. Louis and the Gateway Arch, and it's been named "the worst place in Illinois".
East St. Louis, Illinois: The Worst Place in the State
"If you wear the wrong hat in the wrong place in East St. Louis, you're gonna get iced so you better play it safe"
Wait...Who Said This?
Nick Johnson is a YouTuber and owner of Homesnacks.com where he combines "data from dozens of sources into bite-sized articles to help you understand what it's like to live in different places across America."
Sometimes that means "Best Places for a Family" and other times it means "Best Cities For Singles".
He has hundreds of videos but the one called "The 10 Worst Cities In Illinois Explained" named East St. Louis as Illinois' number one worst place.
"You can tell who's from East St. Louis though they're the ones with the 40, the pistol, the beat-up car and a pit bull "
"East St. Louis has the lowest home values the third highest unemployment rate and the worst crime in the state. There were almost 900 violent crimes in East St. Louis last year (2015) and 27 of those were murders" -Nick Johnson
