Tommy Lee Stuck for Stage Stunt on Reunion Tour
Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee jokingly suggested he was stuck for ideas on what stage stunt to employ on the band’s 2020 reunion tour.
He's become known for a series of outlandish antics during his performances, including playing a solo on a roller coaster during the band's farewell tour – though it broke down during the final performance on Dec. 31, 2015.
Lee was asked about his plans during a press conference where rumors about Motley Crue’s return were confirmed. Titled the Stadium Tour, the road trip also features Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett, with dates announced from July 7 to Sept. 5.
“I’m going to shoot myself out of a fucking cannon at this point,” he told SiriusXM. “I don’t even know what’s left to do. We started designing the production a couple of days ago. We’ve always put everything we have into the design and the production, always try to do a show where people walk out going, ‘That was fucking insane.’”
He noted that "there’s a lot of new technology right now, that we haven’t gotten the chance to play with, and we’re excited. We’re starting to put together something incredible. And [it’s] in a stadium, so everything’s going to be four times as big.”
During the conference, bandmate Nikki Sixx returned to the subject of Motley Crue's reunion, even though they signed a “Cessation of Touring Agreement” that prevented them from ever hitting the road again.
“Honestly, I don’t think any of us thought when we were on the final tour that we would ever get back together,” he said. “We weren’t really getting along at that point. We’d been together 35 years, a lot of years on the road. I don’t think we took a lot of time for ourselves off – we were just constantly touring for all that time. When we came to the end, we broke the band up and everybody went their own ways. I think we really needed that break.”
He added that things began to change as they worked on the biopic The Dirt last year. "We started hanging out again together,” he said. “We really started to realize, without even talking about the music, how much we missed each other. That got us into the studio, which is where the whole thing always starts for all of us. We wrote a whole bunch of music, had a blast in the studio, the movie took off. Our fans were super-stoked, but we also got like a new generation of people. That kind of started the conversation, but it really was from the heart. We missed each other, to be honest with you. We missed being in a band together.”
Singer Vince Neil agreed. “It’s just great to be back in a room with the guys, and talking, joking around ... getting that brotherhood back, that feeling back," he said. "We’ve had a great time. We’ve known each other longer than we’ve ever known anybody else, besides our parents and siblings.”
