Today in 1974: Man Pretending To Be Member of Deep Purple Crashes Porsche in Iowa City

Today in Rock History: November 13th, 1974...

A guy pretending to be Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple crashed a "borrowed" Porsche in Iowa City - he was arrested and charged. We can't find anything about it other than short blurbs about it over the years.

Until we heard from Dan this morning, who remembers being a kid and having a guy knock on the door in the middle of the night covered in mud, saying he just crashed his Porsche at their house in Coralville at 5am. Dan's stepdad came to the door to find a muddy guy dressed like a hippie.

The story was that this muddy guy was driving his friend's Porsche after they'd been out partying all night, crashed the car on I-80, and got into a fistfight with each other. Dan's stepdad called the cops and the "Muddy dirty hippy" as Dan called him was arrested.

Obviously, we can't say this was the same story, but a crashed Porsche in Iowa City/Coralville in the mid-70s? Close enough for us!
