We’re only a couple weeks into summer, and it’s already been one of the craziest on record. Between the sweltering heat waves and the severe weather that has become a weekly occurrence, it seems like the best option to survive the summer is to stay inside.
But unless you want to spend your entire paycheck pumping A/C, it might be worth it to find some ways around the weather and still enjoy the summer sun. Fortunately, the National Weather Service is well verse in the study of weather preparedness (duh) and they have the tips and tricks that will help you survive and thrive this summer.
Pre-Season
Before the hot weather starts, it is of the upmost importance that you make sure all of your ways to stay cool are in working order. Make sure you test your air conditioning and any fans you rely on to keep your home at a livable temperature. It also isn’t a terrible idea to have an emergency kit ready will some instant cool packs and plenty of water.
Just Before the Heat Hits
This is where you really need to get prepared. Make sure you have enough food (that can handle the heat) and water in case outages effect your area. Making sure you check on your loved ones who are vulnerable to the heat is a great way to make sure everyone is staying safe.
During the Heat Wave
All your hard work comes down to this. When you look at the temperature and it’s hitting triple digits, here’s what you should do. If you can, stay inside. Your best bet is to keep cool and not expose yourself to the elements for long stretches of time. If you work outside for can’t avoid leaving the sweet relief of air conditioning, make sure you drink plenty of water and always work with at least one other person.
