Strong Storms Expected Friday in the Quad Cities — Damaging Winds, Tornadoes Possible
Residents across the Quad Cities should prepare for a potentially dangerous round of storms arriving Friday, with forecasters warning that conditions could turn severe by the afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service, the area is under an “Enhanced Risk” (Level 3 out of 5) for severe weather. That means storms are not just possible, they’re likely to develop and could become intense.
When Will the Storms Hit?
Storms could begin to develop mid to late Friday afternoon, but the most significant threat is expected later in the evening and into the night, when storms may become more widespread.
What Are the Main Threats?
Forecasters say the biggest concerns include:
- Strong winds over 70 mph
- A chance for tornadoes
- Heavy rain and frequent lightning
- Possible large hail
These storms could quickly become dangerous, especially during the evening hours.
Flooding Could Also Be an Issue
In addition to severe storms, heavy rainfall is expected, with 1 to 2 or more inches possible in some areas. Because the ground is already saturated, this could lead to:
- Flash flooding
- Water-covered roads
- Rising creeks and rivers
Friday will start off warm and humid, which helps fuel stronger storms later in the day.
What You Should Do Now
- Stay weather-aware, especially in the afternoon and evening
- Have a plan in case warnings are issued
- Avoid driving through flooded areas
While not everyone will see the worst of the storms, this setup has the potential to impact much of eastern Iowa and western Illinois. It’s a good idea to stay alert and be ready to act if conditions worsen.
