Liz Smith is the director of nursing at a hospital in Brighton, Massachusetts, and about two years ago, she got obsessed with one of her patients, an eight-month-old baby named Gisele.

She noticed Gisele being wheeled down a hallway and asked another nurse about her. It turned out she had a bunch of issues, because her mom was a drug addict. And she was less than two pounds when she was born.

But here's the really heartbreaking part: The nurse told her that in the five months Gisele had been there, no one had come to visit her.

Social services had been trying to place her in foster care. So that night, Liz decided she'd take care of her.

She's in her 40s, and doesn't have any kids of her own. But she's always wanted kids. So three weeks later, she got permission to take Gisele home temporarily.

That was two years ago. Gisele still has some health issues, but she's doing a lot better now.

And "The Washington Post" just did a story on them, because Liz was finally able to officially adopt her late last year.
