Authorities say an off-duty special deputy opened fire after a portable toilet was tipped over while he was inside, leaving a 15-year-old boy injured.

Portable Toilet Tipped Over During Security Shift

According to the Cuyahoga County press office, the incident happened in East Cleveland while the deputy was working a secondary security job. At some point, the deputy went into a portable toilet, and while he was inside, the structure was pushed over.

When the deputy managed to get out, he reportedly came face-to-face with a group of individuals. Officials said the deputy claimed one person appeared to be pulling a gun from his waistband.

Deputy Fires Weapon, Group Flees

Fearing for his safety, the deputy drew his weapon and fired. The group of individuals then ran from the scene and left in a vehicle. Not long after, a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound arrived at University Hospital. Authorities believe he was struck during the exchange.

The teenager’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, and he is expected to recover. The deputy was not physically injured during the incident.

Questions About Deputy’s Status

Officials confirmed the man involved is a Special Deputy, which means he holds a commission through the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department but is not currently employed by the county. Special deputies are often used for additional security work and retain certain law enforcement powers.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not said whether charges will be filed. The unusual circumstances surrounding the incident—including the tipped-over portable toilet and the moments that followed—remain under review.
