Is Your Child Safe? The “Chaos and Terror” Taking Over Rock Island High School
Parents in the Rock Island-Milan district are concerned after a school board meeting revealed that Rock Island High School has spiraled into what staff members are calling a "crisis" of violence and disrespect.
The halls, once meant for learning, are reportedly being run by a group of students who have left teachers and fellow classmates living in fear.

"It’s Out of Control": Teachers and Board Members Speak Out
The atmosphere at a recent board meeting held at Ridgewood Elementary was dark, packed with concerned citizens and exhausted staff. Mike Melody, a veteran teacher, didn't hold back when describing the daily environment at the school.
“It is as bad as everyone thought it was,” Melody told the board. “The disrespect, the chaos, the violence… it’s out of control. Full disclosure: I had planned to begin this with a string of profanities, but at the urging of my colleagues and my wife, I decided to skip that part. However, this is how the staff at the high school are treated on a daily basis.”
The sentiment was continued by board member Andrea Gilman, who used even stronger language to describe the situation, stating that too many students “ravage the halls, terrorizing the building.” She noted that a failure to discipline a specific group of "egregious scholars" has led to a breakdown of safety where people are being “threatened, violated, and attacked.”
A School Without a Guard: The Resource Officer Controversy
Adding fuel to the fire is a major security gap. On February 13, the Rock Island Police Department made the controversial decision to pull the School Resource Officer (SRO) out of the high school. While the police cited "staffing shortages" as the reason, the timing couldn't have been worse.
The removal happened just two days after a violent incident at the school that resulted in one student needing medical treatment and another facing criminal charges. Without a dedicated officer on-site, the burden of maintaining order has fallen entirely on a staff that says they are already at a breaking point.
What Happens Next? A District in Search of Answers
Board member Susan Crowder admitted to the crowd that the leadership is struggling to find a solution.
“I see many faces here from Rock Island High School,” Crowder said. “I know you’re in crisis and I’m very, very, sorry, and I wish there was something we could do. I don’t know what to do, but I understand it. I’ve seen it first-hand many, many times, and I can’t imagine being a teacher right now.”
The district is now under immense pressure to implement stricter discipline policies and find a way to bring security back to the campus before the "chaos" results in even more serious injuries.
