One of the biggest advantages of living in Iowa is not having to deal with a lot of traffic. Sure, you'll have the occasional busy road at certain points during the day but very rarely will there be stop-and-go, bumper-to-bumper, traffic on a given highway. If there's stop-and-go traffic on Interstate 380 or U.S. 20, something bad has likely happened.

Unless there's horrendous weather involving snow, tornados, and torrential rain, the most dangerous time to drive is obviously when there are more cars on the road. In bigger cities, this would be during the morning rush hour or the afternoon drive when people are leaving work.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted a study from 2017 to 2020 to discover what time of the day is the most dangerous to drive in all 50 states.

Most Dangerous Time Of The Day to Drive

According to the NHTSA, the most dangerous time of the day to drive in most states is between 6 pm and 6:59 pm. In Georgia, 5.91% of the 7,413 fatal crashes occurred during this 59-minute time frame. North Carolina reported 6.03% of its 5,525 fatal crashes occurred during this time frame, and Ohio reported 6.42% of its 6,935 crashes occurred during these times. The study found that these 59 minutes are the most dangerous for 12 total states.

Not too far behind is between 5 pm and 5:59 pm. This is the most dangerous time to drive for 10 total states. Those states include Tennessee, New York, Colorado and Iowa. Tennessee reported 5,304 fatal crashes with 5.88% of them during this time frame. New York has 4,785 fatal crashes with 6.10% between 5 and 5:59.

Iowa reported 1,544 crashes between 5 and 5:59. 109 of those were fatal which would make that 7.06%.

After these two time frames, the most dangerous times for other states are 8 pm to 8:59 pm, 3 pm to 3:59 pm and 2 pm to 2:59 pm.

Rory Donadio is the CEO of Tribeca Lawsuit Loans and he commented on this conducted study. He said

With the primary theme of this data being that rush hour is arguably the most dangerous time to drive, it can be pointed out that half the hours of the day, like early hours of the morning, don’t even feature. However, this doesn’t mean these times aren’t dangerous in themselves, with fewer cars on the road still posing a serious crash risk with potentially less cautious drivers.

As always, stay safe on the roadways Iowa! Buckle up and you your dang blinker.
