Google hosted a public meeting Thursday night to discuss a proposed data center near the town of Palo in Linn County. Several project leaders were on hand to answer questions from a community with numerous concerns about the project.

When Would The Data Center Be Operational?

KCRG reports that Google would like to have the data center operating within two years. They would like to break ground on the project early next year, with completion of the center by 2031. Google plans to build six buildings on a site near the nuclear power plant in Palo that is slated to reopen, according to KCRG.

What Kind of Environmental Impact Will The Center Have?

One of the main concerns with proposed data centers is the potential impact on the environment. How much energy and water will it use? KCRG reports that Google stated at the meeting that the center will use between 10 and 14 million gallons of water per day. Officials with the project stated that the water basin in the area has enough capacity to support the center.

What Will Google Pay For?

Many residents are also concerned about the potential tax breaks given to companies like Google. KWWL reports that officials at the meeting last night stated that they "would be paying real property taxes." Google also stated that it plans to pay for all costs associated with upgrading local utilities, saying, "We are hyper focused on paying our way for the water infrastructure. That will absolutely be 100% our bill to pay. That includes domestic water and wastewater infrastructure."

If the Palo City Council approves the project, construction could begin next year.
