Illinois Man Arrested After Attempting to Hide Drugs in Buttocks
A 37-year-old Waukegan man has been arrested after allegedly hiding drugs in multiple layers of clothing during a recent police operation in North Chicago, authorities said. Hassan A. Grant was charged with possession of a controlled substance and obstructing justice after officers discovered he was concealing drugs, including cocaine, on his person.
Waukegan Man Arrested After Attempting to Hide Drugs in Multiple Layers of Clothing
The arrest occurred on January 7 during an ongoing investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Group. Officers had been monitoring drug activity in the area when they observed Grant and another individual engage in a hand-to-hand drug transaction on 10th Street in North Chicago. After the exchange, Grant walked toward Waukegan, where he was eventually stopped by officers.
According to Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Colleen McConnell, investigators had received information suggesting Grant was involved in the sale of crack cocaine and heroin laced with fentanyl. A reliable source had also tipped off authorities that Grant frequently concealed drugs in his buttocks and was potentially armed with a gun for robbery.
Drugs Found Hidden in Layers of Clothing
Upon stopping Grant in the 800 block of 10th Street, officers found that he was wearing not one, but three pairs of pants. After Grant consented to a search, officers discovered a small baggie containing cocaine weighing less than a gram. However, a subsequent strip search revealed that Grant was concealing additional drugs in a more unusual location — between his buttocks.
When officers attempted to retrieve the substances, Grant reportedly became uncooperative and began complaining of chest pains. An ambulance was called to the scene, but as Grant was being moved onto the cot, three additional bags of cocaine — each containing 0.2 grams of the substance — fell from his body.
Previous Convictions and Ongoing Parole Violation
Grant’s arrest marks the latest in a series of criminal charges. Public records show that he has served multiple sentences with the Illinois Department of Corrections for offenses including felony firearm possession, residential burglary, and aggravated fleeing to elude. In fact, Grant was on parole at the time of his latest arrest for a shooting that occurred in November 2020 in Waukegan, which resulted in a nine-year sentence.
Just months prior, Grant had been charged for driving with a suspended license, and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to revoke his pre-trial release following his latest drug arrest. Judge Ari Fisz granted the petition, emphasizing that Grant’s extensive history of criminal behavior and his efforts to conceal drugs made him a risk to public safety.
“He went to great lengths to hide the drugs, and no conditions of release could ensure that he would not continue to commit crimes,” Judge Fisz said in court.
Grant is now scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on January 30, where further charges could be addressed.
