A disturbing trend uncovered in California is putting homeowners across the country on alert, and it’s something Quad Cities residents may want to keep in mind, too.

Tiny Devices Are Being Used to Watch Homes Before Break-Ins

Authorities in San Dimas, California, recently discovered hidden surveillance devices aimed at private homes during a burglary investigation. Deputies say a concealed camera was found hidden in bushes directly across from a victim’s house. Investigators reported the device was connected to both a portable hotspot and an external battery pack, allowing it to remotely transmit video for long periods of time.

Officials believe the setup may have been used to monitor when homeowners came and went before a burglary took place.

Another Suspicious Device Was Found Days Earlier

Just one week earlier, a landscaper working in the same neighborhood reportedly found another hidden device tucked into hedges nearby. That device was described as a cellphone attached to a power bank and disguised with camouflage tape and fake greenery to blend into the landscaping.

Law enforcement officials say criminals are becoming more creative with technology and may be using hidden cameras or disguised phones to scout homes before targeting them.

What Quad Cities Residents Should Watch For

While there have been no similar reports locally, the situation serves as a reminder for Quad Cities homeowners to stay aware of anything unusual around their property.

Experts recommend occasionally checking bushes, landscaping, fences, and entryways for unfamiliar objects, especially devices hidden with tape, fake leaves, or camouflage materials. Portable chargers, wires, or phones placed where they don’t belong could also be warning signs.

Residents are encouraged to report anything suspicious to local law enforcement rather than touching or removing possible devices themselves.
