On November 3rd Assumption High School Competed in the 3A state championship against Sioux Center and claimed ultimate victory with a 3-0 sweep!

Here is a highlight video from the game:

Starting The Championship Game

The Lady Knights started down in set 1 but after shaking out the jitters they came back and won the set.

"We were a little nervous in the first set, but going into the second set we were ready to put our foot right on that pedal, put the ball away, and put that set away really fast," Senior AJ Schubert said.

"It would have been great to get that first set, but I know the girls were battling," Sioux Center head coach Julie Oldenkamp said. "We just didn't get enough momentum going. We didn't get the points when we needed them."

Sweeping The Competition

Sets 2 and 3 were also taken by Assumption, giving them a clean sweep over Sioux Center, 25-23, 25-16, and 25-21.

"Davenport Assumption is a great team. We just didn't have enough answers for all their weapons today," Oldenkamp, coach of Sioux Center said. "We knew that was the potential. We tried some different things. Maybe our execution wasn't as sharped as we wanted it to be. Maybe that's what they did to us. Give them some credit for that."

Victorious Head Coach

The head coach of Assumption Frank Flanagan always reminded the girls throughout the season that the team goal was to "win the last match." That last match ended up being the championship game, winning the state title.

Flanagan is a well-loved coach by the team. “Him coming in was probably one of the best things that could happen to the Assumption program,” Schubert said. “He’s straight to the point. It’s like, 'Let’s get in the lab, let’s grind, this is what we have to do. His volleyball IQ is beyond this universe.”

“He brings so much knowledge to the court and there is no drama on the team,” junior outside hitter Maggie Johnson said. “He is like the mediator, kept control and kept us focused on the real goal.”

“He pushed us in practice every day,” setter Ellie Schubert said. “We’re so thankful to have him.”
