Drive Careful Because Harvest Season is Here
Driving during harvest season can be hazardous, especially if you’re not prepared to share the road with slow-moving farm vehicles like tractors, combines and other implements. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to make this experience safer for both drivers and farmers alike. Here are some tips that will help you safely navigate the road with farm vehicles this harvest season.
The Illinois State Police remind you:
- SLOW DOWN. When you see the orange and red triangular slow-moving vehicle emblem, you should immediately slow down.
- KEEP YOUR DISTANCE. Slow moving vehicles can only reach a maximum of 25 mph.
- BE PATIENT. Don’t assume that a farmer can move aside to let you pass. The Farmer must survey the shoulder of the road for an area that can support the weight of the equipment without causing it to tip.
- PASS WITH CAUTION. Never pass farm equipment when approaching a hill or curve, and do not attempt to pass when within 100 yards of an intersection, bridge, or railroad crossing.
- NEVER ASSUME the farmer knows you are there. Farm machinery is very loud and may prevent the operator from hearing another vehicle approach.
When approaching a farm vehicle, drivers should proceed cautiously and pay extra attention to potential hazards on or near roadways. These vehicles may be transporting large loads of grain or other crops and could leave debris behind as they make their way down a roadway. Make sure to allow ample room between your vehicle and one driven by a farmer as both speed and stopping distance will likely be greater for these vehicles.
