The interstate system here in the great U.S. of A enables us to travel long distances quickly. More important than that, though, is the ability it grants to move large amounts of cargo across the country in a relatively cheap and timely manner.

Over-the-road truck drivers have been the backbone of our national economy for decades, but the job doesn’t come without peril. Carrying loads of often expensive cargo means that there are groups who operate on the outskirts of the law looking to score what you’re hauling.

Everyone who has been on a long road trip knows how creepy some of these truck stops can be, and there are many reasons for that. While there’s certainly been an uptick in human trafficking and other crimes of that sort, the most dangerous situations for truckers have more to do with what's in their trailer than what’s in the cab.

In 2023, cargo theft was up 57% from the previous year. While there are companies and law enforcement agencies alike trying to find a solution to this problem, as it stands today it’s more dangerous to be a truck driver than it has been in decades.

There’s been a list floating around the web the past couple of weeks warning truckers of the truck stops and gas stations that are a hotbed for this kind of crime. If you’re hauling through the south, here are the spots you should look to avoid.

Keep in mind, that these are just the noted places to avoid if you’re hauling cargo. It’s always important to remember to lock up and make sure that you’re staying somewhere you feel safe. These criminals are after your cargo but who knows what they’ll do if you get in the way. If you’re taking your load across the country, check out the entire list here.
