I don't "get" Fortnite. I try to "get" it for my son's sake, but it doesn't "trip my trigger" for lack of a better phrase. I'm bad at aiming and shooting. I'm bad at building things.  I don't even really understand why I'm building anything in order to kill other players.

Maybe it's the full 360 world you have to try and navigate. Because the video games I'm used to are two dimensional and I'm an old man.  Yeah, that's probably it.

I remember my parents getting us an Atari.  We would play Pac-Man until all hours of the night.  Donkey Kong was on the rotation too.  And Combat!

Then came Nintendo! Super Mario Bros was my jam!  I knew all the tricks and hacks (mostly because my buddy Matt would subscribe to Nintendo Power magazine where they would publish such things).

Good to see there is a place to go to celebrate the video games of yore.

2022 Inductees

The World Video Game Hall of Fame just announced its newest inductees.  They're adding four this year:

  • Ms. Pac-Man (1982)
  • Dance Dance Revolution (1991)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time(1998)
  • Sid Meier's Civilization (1998)

How Do You Get In?

In order to become eligible for the Hall of Fame, a video game has to meet four criteria.  First, it has to have icon status, meaning it's widely recognized and remembered.  Second, it has to have longevity, so it has to be more than a fad.

Third, it has to have geographical reach, and fourth, it has to have influence, whether that's in pop culture or with the development of future games.
