Iowa, Illinois Both Appear On List Of Worst Cities For Mosquitos
The summer in the Midwest is the worst. Corn sweat makes it hot and humid as it is, and then you factor in that month or two in the middle of the summer, where the bugs become so thick you can see them flying in your yard from 20-30 feet away. It gets so thick you worry about them carrying off a child or a small dog to have as a tasty snack later.
Well, we aren't the only ones who have noticed. Orkin just released their Top 50 Worst Cities For Mosquitos list, and Iowa and Illinois both appeared.
How they determined the worst cities was based on the number of calls for treatment they received over the past year. Iowa has one appearance, and Illinois has two.
Mosquitos account for 600,000 malaria-related deaths per year, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, making them what Orkin says is the deadliest animal in the world.
While not the states with the most appearances, Iowa and Illinois account for 3 of the 50 worst cities.
47. Springfield, Illinois
42. Cedar Rapids, Iowa
2. Chicago, Illinois
How To Beat The Mosquitos In Your Yard
Orkin has their BITE method to stopping mosquitos from getting you (as much) this summer.
- Block access to skin by wearing long sleeves and pants, as well as CDC-recommended repellents.
- Install tight-fitting screens on windows and doors.
- Trim shrubs, grass and other vegetation to reduce mosquito resting areas.
- Eliminate standing water, which is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
