Think about the last time you spent $19,000. That's a considerable chunk of change, you could buy a car, put a down payment on a house, or pay off a bunch of bills. Or, you know, pay for your senior cat's surgery.

Betsy Boyd, a professor at the University of Baltimore, did just that. She says that her cat Stanley has "seen me through the worst moments of my life.”

The 17-year-old feline started to have some kidney problems in his old age and Boyd had no problem dropping nearly $20K to make him better. Betsy and her husband had planned to use their savings on a new car, but plans change.

Stanley actually celebrated his 18th birthday this past weekend. “He purrs all the time. He begs for poultry. He wakes me up at 4 a.m. for a snack. He’s happy, and we’re still very good friends,” Betsy said.
