Vinyl Will Soon Outsell CDs for the First Time Since 1986
CD sales have been tanking ever since streaming became a thing. And soon, for the first time since 1986, we'll be spending more on vinyl records than we are on CDs. Mostly thanks to hipsters who think they're "cool" again.
The Recording Industry Association of America released its mid-year report. And people have spent almost as much on records this year as CDs... $224 million in the first half of 2019, compared to $248 million on compact discs.
CD sales were basically stagnant, while vinyl record sales were up 13%. One of the most popular bands to buy on vinyl is... The Beatles. Last year, Americans bought over 300,000 of their records on vinyl.
