Vinnie Paul Looks Back on His Life and Career in This 2016 Loudwire Interview
Last night, heavy metal lost a legend with the death of drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott of Pantera (more recently he was a member of Hellyeah; he also counted Damageplan and Rebel Meets Rebel as past projects).
Much beloved in the metal community -- see just some of the reactions here -- Abbott was a great storyteller, as we learned when we spoke to him for our "Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction series." Abbott discussed the formation of Pantera, dating all the way back to 1981. Wikipedia had noted the band was first called "Pantera's Metal Magic," but, as we found out, this was not true and the drummer talked about the first two names the band had before ultimately deciding on Pantera.
He also addressed the infamous story of 1999 Stanley Cup winners the Dallas Stars, who celebrated their championship at his house, as well as Damageplan, his post-Pantera band with his late brother "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, who was tragically slain in late 2004.
