Video of Rock Island Police Officer Involved Shooting Released After Court Rules Shooting Justified
A video released by the Rock Island County State's Attorney shows the body-camera footage from an officer involved shooting in April of this year.
On Thursday, May 14th, the Dora Villarreal ruled the shooting death of Kelvin Shaw to be justified.
On April 25th, police arrived on scene after a call about an aggravated domestic battery in which two women were held at gunpoint by Shaw. Upon arrival, officers were able to make contact with the women and get them to safety, but they said Shaw was hiding inside with a weapon.
One of the women was taken to the hospital.
Officers Mumma and Evans were establishing a perimeter around the building, when they spotted Shaw climbing out of a window with a firearm in his right hand.
The officers shouted at him to stop, but he didn't comply, and tried jumping a fence. When he didn't make it over the fence, he aimed the firearm at the officers. Mumma and Evans quick reaction led to 5 shots fired at Shaw, fatally injuring him.
