Two passengers were arrested at the Newark Airport in New Jersey Monday after the TSA discovered they were trying to sneak a rifle through security.

The TSA were doing their normal screening of suitcases when they noticed the weapon hidden within the lining of the suitcase. They immediately alerted the Port Authority PD, who apprehended the suspect who were in the terminal about to board their plane.

The officers confiscated:

  • The rifle (Illegal in NJ)
  • 4 boxes of hollow-point ammunition (Illegal in NJ)
  • 3 magazines
  • 1 "High-Capacity Magazine", which in New Jersey is considered above 10 rounds of ammunition (Illegal in NJ)
  • 2 boxes of rifle ammunition

Tom Carter, TSA's Federal Security Director for New Jersey, said "Our TSA officers are very skilled at detecting firearms and other prohibited items. In this case, they detected an assault rifle, which is illegal in New Jersey; a high-capacity magazine, which is also illegal in New Jersey; four boxes of hollow-point bullets, again, illegal in New Jersey; three magazines, one of which was fully loaded; and two additional boxes of rifle ammunition."
