The nationwide search for Morgan Geyser, the Wisconsin woman convicted in the infamous 2014 “Slender Man” stabbing, came to an end late Sunday after authorities confirmed she was captured in Illinois.

Dramatic Capture After Late-Night Search

According to the Madison Police Department, Geyser was taken into custody around 10:34 p.m. after fleeing a Madison-area group home the night before. Investigators say she removed her Department of Corrections monitoring bracelet before disappearing, sparking alarms across the region.

Police Alerted the Public as Fear Spread

On Sunday morning, Madison police posted a public warning about her escape, raising concerns that she could be on the move with help.“Morgan Geyser was last seen in the area of Kroncke Dr. around 8 p.m. with an adult acquaintance. Her whereabouts are unknown as of Sunday morning,” the department announced. “The Madison Police Department was notified of her disappearance Sunday morning.”Officials also released a recent surveillance image and urged the public, “If you see her, please call 911.”

A Case That Haunted the Nation

In 2017, Geyser pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree intentional homicide in the brutal stabbing of Payton Leutner. She claimed she was not responsible due to her mental illness and told investigators she carried out the attack to satisfy the online horror figure Slender Man. A judge ultimately found her not guilty by reason of mental defect.

Geyser and accomplice Anissa Weier were just 12 years old when they lured Leutner into a wooded park during a sleepover and stabbed her 19 times. Leutner miraculously survived.

A Long Institutional Sentence

Geyser has spent the last seven years at the Winnebago Mental Health Institute after being sentenced to 40 years in psychiatric care. She was recently staying at a group home in Madison before her escape.
