Elderly Man Lucky To Be Alive After Car Crashes Into Home and Lands On Top Of Him
Skip Cunningham, a 70-year-old resident of Rutland, New York, is recovering after a terrifying incident where a vehicle crashed through his living room and landed directly on top of him while he slept.
A Violent Wake-Up Call
The accident occurred just after midnight on Tuesday. Cunningham was dozing on his couch when a car, traveling on snow-covered roads, missed a stop sign and plummeted into his home.
“Next thing I knew, I woke up and blood running down my head and a car laying on top of me,” Cunningham recalled. Despite the shock, he remained calm enough to instruct the driver to call for help. “The guy’s running around saying, ‘Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.’ I says, ‘Well, call 911.’”
Seeking a Winning Ticket
Cunningham was rushed to Samaritan Medical Center, where he received 13 staples for a head wound. Feeling like he had cheated death, he made an unusual request to the paramedics on the way to the hospital.
“I tried to get them to stop at Stewart’s, so I could go in and buy a lottery ticket. But they wouldn’t stop, said, ‘No,’” Cunningham joked.
Demands for Road Safety
This is the fifth time a vehicle has veered onto Cunningham’s property in 50 years. His daughter, Heather LaRose, expressed relief that her young niece wasn't nearby. “It was bad enough. It could have been so much worse,” she said. The family is now calling for the state to install guardrails or a flashing light to prevent future tragedies.
