Middle Schoolers Take the Wheel After Bus Driver Passes Out on Busy Highway
What started as a normal ride home from school turned into a life-or-death moment for dozens of students in Mississippi when their school bus driver suddenly lost consciousness behind the wheel.
Seconds From Disaster
The bus had just left Hancock Middle School in Hancock County on Wednesday, carrying around 40 students, when 46-year-old driver Leah Taylor suffered an asthma attack while traveling on a four-lane highway.
Taylor reached for her medication, but before she could use it, she passed out.
That’s when the students realized something was terribly wrong.
Students Jump Into Action
Twelve-year-old sixth grader Jackson Casnave, who was sitting directly behind the driver, noticed the bus starting to swerve dangerously.
Without hesitation, he jumped up and grabbed the steering wheel.
“I didn’t have time to process my emotions,” Jackson said later. “I just wanted to make sure that nobody got hurt.”
At the same time, fellow sixth grader Darrius Clark rushed forward and slammed on the brakes. Together, the boys managed to guide the bus safely onto the median and put it in park before disaster could strike.
Meanwhile, Darrius’ 13-year-old sister, Kayleigh, ran from the back of the bus to the front and called 911 while terrified students screamed around her.
“I was scared, but also I had to help,” she said.
Saving Lives and Being Celebrated
The bravery didn’t stop there.
Eighth grader Destiny Cornelius noticed Taylor was still holding her nebulizer and quickly helped administer the medicine while sixth grader McKenzy Finch supported Taylor’s head and answered her ringing phone to alert the school transportation team.
Thanks to the students’ fast thinking, Taylor made a full recovery.
“I’m grateful for my students,” Taylor said. “They saved my life and everybody else’s on that bus.”
The young heroes were honored at a school pep rally and will be rewarded with a special lunch outing.
Their principal said it best: they didn’t wait for help—they became the help.
