Louisiana Driver Causes Crash While Attempting TikTok Drift Challenge
A two-vehicle collision in Central on Monday evening was linked to a driver attempting a popular TikTok stunt known as the "Drift" challenge, according to a statement from the Central Police Department. The accident resulted in one vehicle catching fire, though no serious injuries were reported.
Driver Causes Crash While Attempting TikTok "Drift" Challenge
Police responded to multiple calls about a northbound vehicle on Central Thruway that was erratically moving in and out of traffic and suddenly braking in front of other drivers. As the vehicle neared Frenchtown Road, it swerved off the road, crossed the median, and struck a southbound car before coming to rest on the side of the road.
Soon after the impact, the northbound car caught fire. Authorities quickly determined that the driver had been participating in the viral "Drift" challenge, a dangerous game found on TikTok and YouTube where drivers intentionally lose control of their vehicles by oversteering.
Witness accounts and statements from those involved confirmed the driver had been attempting the stunt at the time of the crash, police said.
Police Warn Parents About The Risks
Central Police have warned parents and drivers about the risks associated with these social media challenges, encouraging them to look into the "Drift" and "Double Drift" challenges and talk with teens about the potential dangers.
"One driver learned tonight just how dangerous these online challenges can be," the police department noted in a public statement.
Though the driver’s identity has not been released, the investigation is ongoing. Police are urging the public to avoid reckless driving behavior that could endanger themselves and others on the road.
