Wisconsin Man Flies Helicopter To Cabela’s, Says Drive Was ‘Too Long’

Outdoorsmen and women flock to Cabela's to get hunting, fishing, or camping supplies. And one man in Wisconsin wasn't going to let any kind of situation get in his way to visit.

A pilot in Wisconsin committed one of the most wild parking violations you've ever seen when he landed his helicopter in the parking lot of a Cabela's in Richfield (about 30 miles outside of Milwaukee).

Saturday night, police responded to the scene in the Cabela's parking lot. The 69-year-old pilot from Rosendale told police he flew the helicopter in because the "drive was too long".

The pilot was actually properly licensed, complied with FAA requirements, and answered the deputy's questions about landing requirements.

There were no violations or arrests.

The post from the Washington County Sheriff's Office called it "just a unique way to make a shopping trip to avoid all the roundabouts in front of Cabela's".

Upon further research, apparently it's not specifically illegal to land a helicopter in a parking lot in Wisconsin and clearly the man wasn't surrounded by cars. Is it something you should try to get away with? No probably not. If you're bent on flying a plane or helicopter somewhere, make sure there's an approved helipad or airport you can park at first.
