For a state that has simply perfected fried fish, especially during Lent, you would think that at least one restaurant would land on a list like this. I mean come on! In Wisconsin, Friday fish fries are in a league of their own that no other state can even come close to.

If you think those gophers next door have a lot of lakes, then come to Wisconsin. Wisconsin has a ton of lakes it's literally on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. How doesn't Wisconsin have a restaurant on the "List of Best Fish & Chips in the U.S.?"

For Wisconsin to be left out of this list is a crime and the worst part, a restaurant from Illinois made this list. You know who doesn't know how to cook fish? Those loser Bears fans to the south of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Left Off Of A List It Should Be On

Recently, Food Republic listed the best places to get Fish & Chips in the U.S. Sure, there are restaurants on the East Coast that made the list but not a single one from Wisconsin did. Some place in Chicago made it but not a restaurant in Milwaukee or Madison?! C'mon!

Fried Fish History In Wisconsin

According to Travel Wisconsin, the history of fried fish is rich. Ironically enough, three things contribute to Wisconsin's love for fried fish including:

  • The Catholic Church
  • Prohibition
  • Freshwater Fish

When Wisconsin was settled, most of the people were Catholics of Polish and German descent. Travel Wisconsin says that during Prohibition, selling plates of fish was a way for taverns around the state to make some money and stay open. Being near a ton of lakes, including two Great Lakes, helps getting freshwater fish so easy.
