Your Complete Guide to NASCAR Weekend at Iowa Speedway

I essentially married into a racing family, so while NASCAR wasn't usually on the television growing up, sprint cars and the World of Outlaws certainly is at my in-laws. It didn't take me long to realize that racing is more than just another sport for many people. It's a passion, a tradition, and for many families, a way of life. I've learned that more each year with my racing hour and all my new friends at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway. Racing is huge, that's why it is always exciting when NASCAR comes back to Iowa. It is a chance for local racing fans to see the biggest names in stock car racing compete right here in our backyard while shining a national spotlight on one of the Midwest's favorite tracks, designed by my all-time favorite racer, Rusty Wallace.

If you've been waiting for a weekend packed with stock car racing, Iowa Speedway is the place to be. The action begins Friday and builds all the way to Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol. Whether you are a lifelong fan or someone just looking to catch a race on television, this weekend offers plenty of reasons to tune in.

Friday gets the engines fired up with the ARCA Menards Series and ARCA Menards Series East. Fans can catch practice and qualifying during the afternoon before the JR & CO. 150 takes the green flag at 6 PM CT. It is a great opportunity to see some of racing's rising stars before the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series races Saturday, and the Cup Series takes center stage Sunday.

Here's What You Need to Know, Iowa!

Saturday is a full throttle day at the track. The NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series takes center stage with the Hy-Vee Perks 250, a 250-lap race covering 218.75 miles around the fast 7/8 mile oval in Newton. Before the green flag waves at 4 PM in Iowa, teams will hit the track for practice and qualifying, giving drivers one last chance to dial in their cars and battle for the best starting spot. Iowa is known for rewarding drivers who can keep their tires underneath them while still finding enough speed to make passes, so track position matters, but it's far from everything.

Saturday is also an important day for the NASCAR Cup Series. Cup drivers will have their own practice and qualifying sessions ahead of Sunday's race. Those sessions give teams a chance to fine tune their setups, search for grip and figure out which groove works best before the points are on the line. The qualifying order has already been set using NASCAR's performance metric, which combines recent results with owner points to determine when each driver heads onto the track.

When the Cup Series rolls into town Sunday, there is more than just a trophy at stake. The regular season is winding down, and the playoff picture is getting tighter with every race. Some drivers are looking to punch their ticket to the postseason with a win, while others are trying to stay above the cut line and avoid seeing their championship hopes slip away. One reason fans love Iowa Speedway is because it consistently produces close, exciting racing. The progressive banking and relatively short layout allow drivers to run multiple grooves, set up passes and battle side by side for long stretches. Restarts can become a mad dash into Turn 1, and late race cautions often lead to thrilling finishes where drivers have to decide whether to play it safe or throw a bold move for the lead. According to Inside the Race, "The track forces guys to bounce off each other. There's gonna' be some crashes. There's gonna' be some cautions."  It is the kind of track where handling, patience and tire management are every bit as important as horsepower.

The corn is up for grabs, and if there's one thing I've learned from marrying into a racing family, it's that there is nothing quite like hearing engines fire up, while the grandstands fill. And Iowa gets to experience it all over again this weekend.
