Florida Man Burgling Cars Leaves Pizza Trail To Himself

A suspected thief in the Deltona, Florida area was able to hide from police, but couldn't hide his love for pizza, and it came back to bite him.

Volusia County Deputies say they were called to a string of car burglaries in a neighborhood, and the evidence pointed them straight to their suspect.

When they arrived, the first vehicle's center console had been rummaged through, and the thief left behind what appeared to be marinara sauce, on the inside of the driver's side door handle.

"A few doors down the street, deputies noticed an empty pizza box at the scene where another car break occurred. Missing from that vehicle was a 9mm handgun and an old concealed weapons permit," deputies said.

The suspect was reportedly found walking down the street in a nearby neighborhood carrying one of the victim's credit cards and IDs. The officials identified him as Dewey J. Smith.

A neighbor saw the deputies speaking with the suspect, and told them he had just stopped by and asked if she knew anyone "looking to buy a gun." She said he was carrying a white grocery bag containing credit cards, gift cards, and he even asked her to call the number on the back of one of the cards to find out what the balance is.

This neighbor is also the origin of the pizza.

"She refused, but she said Smith did take some of the Little Caesar’s pizza she’d ordered earlier in the night. She said she’d thrown away the pizza and the box, and Smith took it out of the garbage," the deputies said.

Reportedly, when deputies found him on Twin Oaks Street with the victims' cards still in his possession, he told deputies, "You got me red handed."

Smith was taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail where he's being held on $71,000 bond for his charges, which include:

• Armed Burglary of a Conveyance
• Four Counts of Fraudulent Use of Credit Cards
• Grand Theft of a Firearm
• Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon

The stolen firearm wasn't immediately located.
