Strangers Step In To Help 92-Year-Old Woman Who Can’t Afford To Retire
A routine shopping trip at a Burlington store in Pompano Beach, Florida, recently sparked a massive wave of community kindness. April Steele was browsing the aisles when she encountered Muriel Connick, a 92-year-old employee managing the dressing rooms.
“I noticed this lady working in the dressing room. This woman’s got to be in her 80s, and she is still working! My heart sank,” Steele recalled.
A Necessary Hustle
For Connick, working at 92 isn't a choice; it is a matter of survival. She explained that her Social Security benefits fall short of her monthly bills.
“Well, I have to,” Connick said. “It’s the rent, and it’s the car payment and the car insurance and the telephone, electricity, and cable.”
Social Media Sparks Action
Steele felt compelled to help after wondering, “Why is a 92-year-old woman working? It just seemed unbelievable to me.” After sharing Connick's story on Facebook, Steele launched a GoFundMe campaign that has already raised over $5,000.
“And it has taken off. People have been so generous,” Steele noted. The funds are earmarked for living expenses and urgent home repairs, such as fixing unstable floorboards in Connick’s mobile home.
Grateful for Strangers
Connick was stunned by the viral support. “I was really surprised. Yeah, and I didn’t know she was going to do all this. I thought she was going to give me a card and say, you know, ‘This is to help you,’” she said.
Though she hasn't met her donors, her gratitude is immense: “I don’t know who they are, [but] I thank them very much, and I don’t know what I’d do without them.”
