For seven long years, Christine Connell suffered from persistent sinus infections that baffled both her and her doctors. No treatment seemed to work, and the root cause remained a mystery—until doctors finally performed a culture test on her nasal passages.

The shocking result? E. coli. And Connell believes it all started with an unfortunate moment involving her ex-boyfriend and a particularly potent fart.

“E. coli is from poop,” Connell explained in a viral TikTok video that has already racked up over 436,000 views. “How else would it get in my sinuses unless I was forced to inhale it after ankle surgery while my boyfriend passed gas right in my direction?”

A Mystery Infection That Wouldn’t Quit

Connell recalled being stuck in a hotel room while recovering from ankle surgery. She was resting in one of two queen beds when her then-boyfriend stood naked between them, turned his backside toward her, and let out what she described as “the worst fart” she’s ever experienced.

Soon after, the sinus infections began. For years, they returned again and again, defying antibiotics and nasal sprays. Doctors were stumped until a culture test identified the presence of E. coli—a bacteria typically found in the intestines.

From Foul Smell to Medical Mayhem

According to the CDC, most strains of E. coli are harmless and even beneficial for digestion. However, some can lead to serious infections, including in the sinuses, although this is extremely rare.

Connell suspects that her weakened immune system, due to her surgery, may have made her more vulnerable to infection. “If I hadn’t been recovering from surgery, I don’t think it would’ve happened,” she said.

Despite the bizarre origin, she doesn't believe her ex was trying to harm her. “He wasn’t aiming it at me,” she explained. “It just happened that my face was in the line of fire.”

When Common Bacteria Becomes an Uncommon Problem

Sinus infections occur when the sinuses become inflamed and fluid builds up, often due to colds, allergies, or bacteria. They usually resolve within 10 days, but Connell’s case required deeper intervention.

In a follow-up video, she revealed that surgery is now on the table. Doctors plan to put her under anesthesia and physically clean out the infected tissue to finally put an end to the years-long ordeal.
