Video Shows Driver Striking Cyclists, 72-Year-Old Arrested
A 72-year-old man is behind bars after a road-rage incident in which he hit two cyclists with his car before before leaving the scene, and it's all caught on video.
Richard Collins was leading a group of cyclists in North Georgia on Thursday, when a driver approached the group from behind, honking excessively for around two minutes. When he started going around the group, he was driving as if to try and corall them to the side of the road, when one of the mirrors struck Collins, knocking him off of his bicycle.
Collins was treated by paramedics for road rash on his shoulder, elbow, and knee. Later at a doctor's visit, it was discovered he also had a fracture of his lower spine.
Cherokee County Sheriff's officials arrested the driver, 72-year-old Jerry Wayne Ross, later on at a neighbor's house nearby.
Ross is facing six charges, including hit-and-run, aggressive driving, and failing to maintain a safe distance from a bicycle.
"I just hope this experience will raise awareness to the rules of the road, for cyclists, and how drivers should allow for the 3 feet distance in safe passing," Richard Collins told Fox5Atlanta.
When he was questioned by deputies, Ross blamed the cyclists and claimed they were in the road.
Georgia law requires 3 feet of distance when passing cyclists.
