A 5-year-old boy is in fair condition after being pounced on by a mountain lion in the yard of his Colorado home. He was playing with his brother outside when his mother heard a scream.

When she ran out to investigate, the mountain lion was on top of the boy. She then pulled the beast off of her son and got the boy to safety.

The 5-year-old suffered injuries to his face, head, and neck, but he was conscious and alert at the emergency room.

Sheriff's deputies and a U.S. Forest Service officer found the mountain lion near the home and killed it. Officials with Colorado Parks and Wildlife plan to examine the deceased animal and are searching for a second lion that was reportedly sighted in the area.
