College is back in session, which means football games, new friends, parties and, unfortunately, more stories about fraternity hazing.

Earlier this year, a bizarre hazing case at the University of Iowa made headlines after police body-camera footage showed 56 male pledges blindfolded in the basement of an Alpha Delta Phi house. Officers had originally responded to a fire alarm in November 2024 and found the students covered in ketchup, mustard, and alcohol. The fraternity was later suspended through at least 2029.

Now, two more hazing investigations are making headlines.

30 Pledges Found in Hot, Messy Basement

In Madison, Wisconsin, police responded to an anonymous tip about a possible hazing event at an off-campus Alpha Epsilon Pi house on Sept. 23.

Officers said they found around 30 mostly 18-year-old men partially clothed in a basement. Police reported that the men were covered in food, condiments, and other liquids, while several had visible injuries that officers said appeared consistent with physical assault.

The basement thermostat was set to 81 degrees, creating hot and humid conditions.

Two 20-year-old fraternity leaders, Brayden Klein and Samuel Vane, were arrested on suspicion of hazing and disorderly conduct. The investigation remains ongoing.

Arizona Fraternity Also Under Investigation

The University of Arizona is investigating Sigma Tau Gamma after allegations that new members were forced to consume large amounts of alcohol and swallow live goldfish. The university also said students were allegedly subjected to screaming, degradation, and threats.

The fraternity has been placed on an activities suspension while the investigation continues. The university's current conduct page lists hazing, alcohol violations and endangering behavior among the alleged violations.

The University of Arizona recently held National Hazing Prevention Week and reminded students that hazing can involve physical harm, humiliation, forced consumption, and other dangerous behavior.

Why do frats do this weird stuff? The world may never know...
