A family from Pennsylvania went on a road trip last month, and they realized a little way into their trip that they had an uninvited stowaway who came along with them.

The Denardo family was going from their home in New Hampshire to the Big Apple for a marathon, seeing the musical Hamilton, and exploring New York City for what it was. They had their minivan loaded up with their luggage, their snacks, and their kids.

About 100 miles down Interstate 80 at 70mph, the Denardos needed gas and pulled into a gas station to refuel. It was then that Mara Denardos' husband, Mr. Denardo, noticed that their cat, Ray Ray, was hanging out on the roof of the van.

"My husband gets out of the car, obviously to pump the gas, and is like, 'the cat is on the roof,'" she said. "We're like, what do we do? We're already so far into the trip and we have a long way to go to get to New Hampshire, so my husband said, 'he's just going to have to go with us."

Knowing they didn't have time to turn around to take Ray Ray home, the family headed on to New York City. They stopped at a pet store and got a litter box, some food, and a cat backpack.

Mara said the cat was a hit everywhere they went, especially once they told people the story. It inspired her to create a children's book - called The Cat Who Wouldn't Stray.
